DESKTOP PUBLISHING AND THE RESUMÉ

Personal resumés have undergone a revolution in style, format and presentation over the last decade or so. This is mainly due to desktop publishing and word processing such as the multifarious aids that are available through computer programs like Microsoft Word.
It should be your aim to make sure that your resumé is noticed when it's sitting on a HR desk alongside a lot of other resumés. Most of your competitors for the job for which you're applying, would have used sophisticated modern methods and, therefore, you should always make sure that you are keeping up with the latest technology.
Here are a few hints to keep in mind when compiling your resumé:
- Design an attractive front cover using plenty of colour;
- Consider using 80% Grey as an alternative to black as the main colour for your text; grey is softer and, thus, easier to read, although the reader does not usually recognise the subtle difference. (Did you realise that this document is in 80% Grey?)
- Also use colour for the headings in the resumé; navy blue and dark red are distinctive while not being too garish;
- Page borders help to concentrate the eye on the all-important wording inside the border;
- If you're sending your resumé by mail, consider printing it on a textured, off-white parchment paper that will help your document stand out from those of your rivals; you'll be surprised at the range of interesting papers that are now available from all good stationers.
